Energy Loss and Fire Hazard with Uncovered Recessed Light fittings
In recent years, there has been a trend towards the installation of recessed lighting fixtures in our homes. Recessed lighting has a stylish and modern effect in room lighting but when the fixtures penetrate a cold roof space and remain uncovered, the effect on energy loss will be be substantial.
Fire
Hazard -
Air movement in cold loft spaces can move ignitable material
onto the hot lamp surface posing a substantial risk of fire.
This is main cause of fire with recessed light fittings.
Downlight Covers will prevent this from happening.
Cold Air Infiltration - Cold air infiltrates through ceiling penetrations created to install both LED and standard halogen down-lights, causing heat loss throughout the dwelling Compromised Levels of Insulation - When recessed lighting is fitted through to an insulated space, insulation material must be kept back from the fitting to prevent shorting of the bulb. This break in the insulation results in substantial heat loss from the room below.
Convection Currents - When your recessed
lights are turned on, heat from the bulb causes air from the
living area to be drawn up into the roof area.
Heated Air Pressure - On colder days,
uncovered recessed down-light fittings create openings and gaps
in your insulation which enable the hot air in the rooms to leak
into the cold loft space. hot air always moves up and when the
heating is switched on, the warm air moves straight into the
roof area causing excessive energy loss.
Expansion of Heated Air - On hot days,
the heat from the sun creates extremely hot air in the roof
area. This stale air expands and pushes down into the living
area through uncovered, recessed down-light fittings.
Air Drop - During cold nights,
uncovered, recessed down-light fittings enable cold air to freely
drop into the house. the rooms cool quicker with uncovered
recessed down-light fittings.
Spread of Draughts - On windy days, the
air movement and draughts in the loft area can freely move into
the living area through uncovered recessed down-light fittings.
The illustration below shows the fitting of recessed lighting without the use of Down-light Covers. It is apparent why this method of fitting results in extreme energy loss throughout.
Full and uncompromised levels of thermal insulation and maximum levels of air-tightness are required in order to achieve maximum levels of energy efficiency. Installation of Down-light Covers The down-light Cover can be easily fitted over existing or new recessed light fittings. Transformers and junction boxes should be placed outside the Down-light Cover unit. A constant bead of mastic based sealant should be applied to the base before fitting, or to the perimeter after fitting, and wiped in to achieve air-tightness.
Construction and Applications The interior of the Down-light Cover contains a class O fire rated coating. This coating is flame retardant and non combustible. The Down-light Cover is notched to allow for the passage of cables and for easy installation over existing fittings. Insulation material can be fitted directly around and over the Down-light Cover when installed to maintain a continuous layer of insulation over the whole of the loft space. Down-light Covers will accommodate all types of common insulation materials including Mineral Fibre, Blown Cellulose and Rigid Foam. By installing the Down-light Cover over all recessed light fittings in insulated loft spaces, you are ensuring the maximum and most effective levels of insulation are achieved in both new builds and retro-fits or renovations.
